He Stirred Up The People

Text: Matthew 21:10; Luke 25:5

Introduction:

The two verses that I have read for our text this morning speak of Christ as having moved, stirred, or agitated the people of Jerusalem . The first is in somewhat of a positive manner and the second is used in a negative way. The point I want to look at this morning is that Christ stirred up the people. I want to focus on the fact that we can find several instances in the Scriptures where Christ stirs people. I hope that this morning He will still stir us.

I.       He Stirs People:

    A.      By His words:

1.        Never man spake like this man.

2.        He taught them as one having authority.

3.        Even when he spoke not a word he made people marvel. Matthew 27:13-14

    B.       By His worth – His character

1.        No fault was in him, no sin.

2.        Nothing but holiness, gentleness, compassion and a desire to do His Father’s will.

3.        Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.  Matthew 27:54

    C.       By His works:

1.        And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.  Mark 1:27

2.        And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. Luke 4:36

3.        In raising Lazarus from the dead – John 11:45 “many believed”

    D.      He stirred people then:

1.        Peter, James, John, Matthew, Paul.

2.        The whole church at Jerusalem after his ascension was moved at the name of Christ.

    E.       He stirs people today:

1.        By the moving of the Spirit

2.        By the preaching of His word

a)       And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also; Acts 17:6

b)       We ought to be like Elijah was. When Ahab saw Elijah he asked him if he was the one who was troubling Israel .

c)       All he was doing was living for the Lord and speaking God’s Word.

II.    He Stirs Men to Examine Their Lives:

A.      He stirs people out of their lethargy, their complacency. He causes people to be dissatisfied with themselves and see their greatest need.

B.       We may be stirred by others and books for a while but Christ will change us forever.

1.        Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.  Acts 26:28

2.        Almost persuaded – how sad indeed that one would be almost persuaded.

3.        is that what we are like this morning – Almost persuaded to be saved, to be right with God, to be baptized, to be a faithful worker, to accept His will for ours?

C.       He stirred men to do great things for Him:

1.        Paul, Apollos, Peter, Moody, Spurgeon, Graves , Gill, Pink, Sunday, Finney, Edwards, Owens, Judson and a host of other men and woman.

2.        He stirred Lydia , Martha, Mary, Deborah, Ruth, Hannah, Sarah, and Jael.

III. He Stirs Men to Salvation:

A.      Nicodemus
B.       Zacchaeus
C.
The woman at the well
D.
Blind Bartimaeus
E.
Saul
F.
The Philippian Jailor
G.
The thief on the cross
H.
Has he stirred you this morning to be saved?
I.
Has he stirred you this morning to be right with him?
J.
Has he stirred you to honor him this morning?
